Cheddar Gorge

If you know me in real life, you'll probably know I have a serious love for cheese. A serious serious love. So a trip to Cheddar and the cheese shops there  made the perfect day out for me.

It was a beautiful sunny Thursday day a week or so ago when my mister and I drove over to The Gorge for an adventure. We pottered round the village for a while, stopping in at several cheese places (this one is the best), and a cider shop or two. Oh and there's a tiny sweet shop in the village there where you can actually watch them make the sweets before you buy them! Having seen all we wanted to in the village, we headed up the hill to take in the views from the top of the gorge.

We had decided to follow the northern side of the national trust circular walk, and had intended to head to the national trust shop in the village to pick up a free map. But apparently the shop shuts on a Thursday (obviously). So on the advice of the nice man in the car park (£5 for a days parking), we headed willy-nilly up the road in search of the start of the footpath.

Its about a mile out of the village, and don't worry, its pretty obvious!!

The start of the walk is pretty intense, but the view when you get the top is so worth it!

And we made the most of it over a picnic lunch of cheese, crackers and chutney. Bliss!

After a little post lunch siesta in the dappled shade of a convenient tree we continued off on on our adventures.

Having been teased by momentary glimpses the edge of The Gorge, hidden away behind a dry stone wall (and some intimidating barbed wire), we took the first opportunity we could to get a little closer, straying from the designated footpath in search of that great limestone landmark. (Side note, this so went against evey instinct I have to follow the rules!) But my goodness were we rewarded for our efforts! We found some aaaamazing views.

I'll be honest with you here, I was terrified. But in my quest for a photo I gingerly edged my way to the edge, and I couldn't be more happy that I did!

I don't know if you can see, but that little pink blob just to the right of center is me, carefully edging towards the cliff..

Having completed  the rest of the walk (a nice gentle stroll downhill towards the village), we headed to the pub for a well earned drink, before making our leisurely way home.

Oh, and this guy was just chilling at the side of the road, so we couldn't not stop and snap a picture or two.

All in all, a  really lovely day. :)
Isn't cheese the greatest!

Much Love,
Jess
